Meaty Deep Dish Pizza Pie
- 1 lb lean ground beef
- 1/2 lb beef sausage, casings removed
- 1 cup sliced pepperoni
- 1 unbaked deep-dish pie crust (9-inch)
- 1 cup pizza sauce or marinara sauce
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese (freshly shredded melts best)
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- salt and freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
Instructions
- Preheat & prepare pan: Heat oven to 375°F (190°C). Fit the unbaked 9-inch deep-dish pie crust into a deep-dish pie pan, pressing along the bottom and sides.
- Cook meaty filling: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook ground beef and beef sausage, breaking into crumbles, until browned and cooked through. Drain well. Season with Italian seasoning, garlic powder, salt, and pepper; stir to combine.
- Layer the pie: Sprinkle 1 cup mozzarella over the crust. Spread half the meat mixture on top, then half the sauce, then half the pepperoni. Repeat with remaining meat, remaining sauce, remaining 1 cup mozzarella, and remaining pepperoni on top.
- Bake: Set the pie on a baking sheet. Bake 25–30 minutes, until cheese is melted and bubbling and crust edges are golden brown.
- Rest & serve: Let stand 5–10 minutes before slicing into wedges for clean layers. Serve warm.
Notes
For the best stretch and flavor, shred mozzarella from a block. Thoroughly draining the cooked meat helps prevent a soggy crust. Add crushed red pepper or sautéed mushrooms if you like.
